A1 – The Great North Road
Our Story
The story of Exelby Services began in the 1940s, when Ron Exelby opened a garage on the A1 at Londonderry, North Yorkshire. With the A1 already serving as a major route for long-haul transport, Ron recognized an opportunity to support the growing haulage industry and pioneered diesel bunkering.
The facility enabled transport companies to store their own fuel at Londonderry Garage for a small fee, helping operators save significantly compared with traditional pump prices.
North of England
Over the years, our fuel and forecourt services have continued to grow. Today, our network includes A1(M) Coneygarth, M6 Golden Fleece, M62 Whitwood and A19 Teesside.
Since 2013, Exelby Services has proudly operated as a Shell dealer, offering a comprehensive range of Shell fuels and lubricants for all types of vehicles.
In 2014, Coneygarth opened, replacing the original Londonderry Garage site. Each of our locations have been developed with professional drivers and the haulage industry in mind, while also providing extensive retail and customer facilities.
Continuing to Invest
Despite the challenges of 2020, we continued to invest in and redevelop our sites.
Our A19 North site underwent a complete redevelopment and reopened in November 2020, featuring a full-size Ferrari model suspended from the shop ceiling.
At Coneygarth, we’ve added a second lorry park, additional showers and toilets, as well as the first Torque gym.
Golden Fleece now offers free Wi-Fi in the lorry park with a Truck Park extension on the horizon.
Coneygarth, Golden Fleece and both A19 sites now boast an enhanced Hot Food to Go range, featuring popular brands including Rollover, Stone Willy’s and Country Choice.

Our commitment to the haulage industry remains at the heart of everything we do. We will continue to invest in our sites, adding new facilities and services designed to providing everything professional drivers & haulage companies need while on the road.
